Ron Robey thought heart trouble meant the end of traveling. “I was in Puerto Rico, snorkeling with a church group, and I really had trouble breathing. I guess I hadn’t realized how bad my condition had gotten.”
Back in Virginia, quintuple bypass surgery was only one part of Ron’s treatment; he also enrolled in a sixteen-week cardiac rehabilitation program at Bedford Memorial Hospital. “The team there helped me get my strength back,” Ron says.
With their help, Ron used the treadmill and stationary bicycle. He started working out with weights again, and they helped him build stress relief strategies and a dietary plan. They’re tools he still uses today, almost five years later.
“I’m always surprised when I meet local people who have had bypass surgery and elected not to go through rehab,” Ron says. “I can’t imagine progressing as well as I did without the confidence of their support.”
Now Ron Robey has energy again for his hobbies – refinishing furniture and golfing. And yes, he does travel – a few times a year to Phoenix to visit his new grandson. “That’s something I couldn’t miss.”
