Hospitalists

Keeping abreast of ever-changing medical advancements is challenging for healthcare professionals. Due to better medicines and outpatient procedures, primary care physicians (PCPs) now treat patients more often outside of the hospital environment. But when patient illness requires hospitalization, PCPs look to hospitalists for inpatient care.

What is a Hospitalist?

In many hospital settings, primary care physicians (PCPs) partner with hospital-based physicians called hospitalists. These doctors specialize in the treatment of serious illnesses and medical emergencies, requiring hospital admission. These “house” doctors only care for patients in the
hospital and are experienced in a wide range of advanced testing and treatment options. They are trained in bedside patient care and are devoted to inpatient needs around the clock so patients do not have to wait for treatment.

Coordinated Patient Care

At Bedford Memorial Hospital (BMH), our team of hospitalists are partnering with our area’s primary care physicians to better serve the patient. If a PCP determines that hospitalization is needed, our hospitalists will take responsibility for the patient’s care, arranging testing and treatment with the medical center’s nursing and healthcare staff. They will also communicate to the patient and to the PCP the prescribed inpatient treatment program, therapies and progress.

When the patient is released, the PCP then takes the lead role in the patient’s follow-up care. This physician partnership allows doctors to concentrate on the type of medicine they do best and gives patients high-quality medical care.
