What They're Saying

Donnie McKinney Jr

For Donnie McKinney, Jr., baseball is a family tradition. His dad was on Liberty High School’s state championship team in 1977. His mom coached little league and won’t miss a game.
So when a shoulder injury last fall threatened to bench the Liberty High School senior, it meant more than the pain of a strained rotator cuff. It meant a major lifestyle change.

“All of these thoughts ran through my head,” Donnie says, “that I wouldn’t be able to be able to play on the team this season or get a walk-on spot on a college team next year.”
But those thoughts were short lived, because a referral to Bedford Memorial Hospital’s physical therapy services was just what Donnie needed to get back in the game.

The therapists explained the injury to him, demonstrating exercises to help heal and strengthen the injured shoulder. “I was really lucky,” Donnie says, stretching out before practice. “If I had tried to do it on my own or if I did too much, too soon, it would have been much worse.”

Now a new season’s underway, and with the help of his physical therapy team, Donnie is back on the field.
