Bedford Memorial Hospital (BMH) will offer Safe Sitters classes for girls and boys ages 11-13 on Saturday, June 4, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the hospital training room, located on the second floor. Registration for the program is open until June 1.
The Safe Sitters program, sponsored by BMH, is a medically accurate program that teaches young adolescents how to handle emergencies when caring for younger children. The cost is $25 and scholarships are available, based on financial need.
Thousands of young adolescents across the country have been trained by Safe Sitters to handle life-threatening emergencies. Trained instructors teach all information. During the course, students get hands-on practice in basic lifesaving techniques so they are prepared to act in a crisis.
Safe Sitters also receive helpful tips to make them more confident caregivers. They learn safety precautions and how to understand and deal with children of different ages. They even learn about the business aspects of babysitting.
To successfully complete the Safe Sitters program, students must pass a test to show that they have mastered the key concepts and have the skills necessary to handle an emergency.
